1. Why was iStudyHebrew created?

In 1996, Tal-Shahar Ltd began selling educational material, Judaica gifts, holiday baskets and products to the public. Since then hundreds of our customers have asked for a course that can help them to learn Hebrew quickly and easily. The need of many students is for a "live" tutor who can explain, teach and answer questions. That is why we decided to establish a new online approach to learning Hebrew called iStudyHebrew.

2. How does iStudyHebrew differ from other types of Web-based education, including distance learning?

iStudyHebrew differs from other institutional Web-based education offerings in that it offers students a "live" Hebrew course at a reasonable price. We also provide an institutional approach to online course publication. iStudyHebrew is not a distance-education or degree-granting initiative. Distance education involves the active exchange of information between faculty and students, with the goal of obtaining some form of a credential. iStudyHebrew is not meant to replace degree-granting higher education or for-credit courses. Rather, the goal is to provide practical knowledge of the Hebrew language.

Many individual faculty members at iStudyHebrew and universities already use the Web extensively to make standard course materials available to their students. Some colleges and universities now require a Web site for every class. But, to a large extent, these Web sites are designed for, and access is only provided to, the students enrolled at these institutions. The goal of iStudyHebrew is to provide the course materials to anyone who is interested in learning practical Hebrew.

3. What are the long-term goals of the iStudyHebrew initiative?

iStudyHebrew offers a new electronic publishing model for educational material enabled by Internet technologies. While iStudyHebrew's published content already provides value to users, over the next five years, the content, technology, and processes will become increasingly more robust. We expect iStudyHebrew to reach a steady, though never static, state by 2008.

We will be publishing five additional iStudyHebrew courses, with topics such as The Bible, Judaism, Israeli Politics and much more, updating existing courses, conducting continuous vigorous evaluation of the program's success, and enhancing our content management and publishing technologies.
